Volunteer Opportunities – We Face Foward – Art From West Africa Today

We Face Forward is a major exhibition of contemporary art drawn from countries in West Africa with selected works of art from the Americas and the Caribbean. The exhibition will take place across three locations: the Whitworth Art Gallery and park, Manchester Art Gallery and Gallery of Costume (Platt Hall) and will feature painting, drawing, photography, textiles and fashion, sculpture, video, and sound work – from a wide range of artists whose work is internationally known, but relatively little seen in the UK.

We are looking for volunteers from the local community and would like to encourage those from local West African communities or who have links to West Africa to take part in an exciting volunteer programme that will span the four venues involved. Participants will take part in a series of training workshops delivered by curators, artists and Gallery staff. Full information is attached, please pass to colleagues and networks.

During the training workshops individuals will learn about the venues, the exhibition and key artworks while developing knowledge and skills to share West African art with our visitors.  On completion of the training volunteers will play an important role welcoming visitors to the galleries, supporting gallery staff and helping at a range of events. Volunteers will be fully supported in these roles and will need a reasonable level of spoken English, but good reading or writing English skills are not essential. We will provide out of pocket travel expenses and volunteers can claim up to £5.00 per session for this on submission of receipts.

We hope volunteers will enjoy being part of the We Face Forward team, developing new skills and contributing to the cultural and social lives of other people in Manchester. Volunteers on this programme will be given the opportunity to join the on-going volunteer programme at the participating venues.
